Drive - desire. Desire springs from lack. Desire is the part of the demand that cannot be articulated in a request, the part that language cannot capture. What one really desires cannot be attained and satisfied. The 'object petit a' fulfills that part which can be satisfied and brings temporary relief. The 'object petit a' becomes a metonym for the desire. For example, the gaze is a metonym for the desire to be recognised by the other. (Lacan)
